Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in Chelsea, New York: Press Release
March 4-March 9, 2011
Claude Monet once mused, “Paint what you really see, not what you think you ought to see… the object enveloped in sunlight and atmosphere, with the blue dome of Heaven reflected in the shadows.” Like Monet, Contemporary artist Mina Novian creates beautiful paintings that capture her impressions of the world around her. Ms. Novian paints striking landscapes and intimate figurative works that combine her love for color with dazzling luminescence and enthralling texture, uplifting the mind and soothing the soul through her inspirational art.
Ms. Novian’s exquisite landscape paintings blend an Impressionist aesthetic with the sublime power of Romanticism. Working in this distinctive style, Ms. Novian deftly captures the splendor, joy, and emotion of the scenes she recreates. The artist thoughtfully acknowledges that her paintbrush is a medium for portraying the magnificence of the world around us. She explains, “My art is a gift from the universe and my canvases are simply a vessel to capture the great beauty I see and the energy that is contained in all things.” There is no doubt that each of Ms. Novian’s exceptional works brims with a unique vigor that seems to radiate from the very fibers of the canvas.
Ms. Novian crafts this alluring atmosphere through her masterful coloration and textural brushstrokes. She skillfully manipulates the oil medium, working with quick staccato brushstrokes that seem to lift right off the canvas. By layering the paint in this Impressionist manner, Ms. Novian allows her colors to sing with unparalleled vivacity. The artist possesses the skilled eye of a true colorist, balancing chromatic selections from the entire range of the spectrum with ease.
Ms. Novian’s figurative work unifies the dynamism of her landscapes with a sense of vulnerability and intimacy. As in her natural vistas, Ms. Novian utilizes the formal elements of her portraits to illustrate both the physical appearance and inner spirit of her captivating subjects. In “Minyon,” Ms. Novian contrasts the directness of the figure’s gaze with the delicate lace garment and soft pastel background. The overall effect is an aesthetically pleasing and psychologically compelling portrait that pleases the eye and stimulates the senses. It is this ability to energize and unite the total composition that imbues Ms. Novian’s works with a joie-de-vivre that is both innovative and timeless.
Mina Novian was born in Tehran, Iran and raised in New Jersey. She now lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Ms. Novian has exhibited her glorious paintings on both coasts, participating in solo and group exhibitions in Florida and California. Ms. Novian is active in several humanitarian organizations that she benefits through the sale of her artwork. Amsterdam Whitney Gallery is proud to showcase her ravishing paintings.
